Finding Your Private IP Address

Every device connected to the Internet is given a unique identifier called an IP address. There is both a public IP address and a private IP address. The first is the identifier that is used for your device on the wider Internet. A private IP address is assigned by the router that you’re connected to and identifies your device on the network.

Being able to find your private IP address can help you configure several network-related settings.

Finding Your Private IP Address on Windows

Open your Windows menu and search for “cmd”. Select “Command Prompt”.

Type “ipconfig” into the command prompt and press enter.

Your device’s private IP address will appear next to IPv4 Address.

Finding Your Private IP Address on macOS

Open the Apple menu and select “System Preferences”.

Select “Network” and then click “Advanced”.

Click the TCP/IP tab. Your device’s private IP address will appear next to IPv4 Address.

Finding Your Private IP Address on iOS

Go to Settings.
Press Wi-Fi.

Press the name of the Wi-Fi network your device is connected to.

Your device’s private IP address will appear next to IP address.

Finding Your Private IP Address on Android

Go to Settings.

Press Wi-Fi, and select your current active Wi-Fi network.

Press Advanced. Your device’s private IP address will appear under IP address.

Finding Your Default Gateway Address

Your “default gateway” is another name for your router, and it has an IP address of its own. Its job is to transfer traffic to and from your local network to the Internet at large or other networks.

Knowing how to access your default gateway is helpful for troubleshooting network issues and accessing your router’s settings.
